With a lengthy to-do list, a busy schedule and email that keeps piling up, it’s no wonder it’s a challenge to relax. But a restless mind can easily trigger time management issues, not to mention a host of other health and wellness concerns.
Many Americans are turning to meditation and mindfulness as solutions for how to relax your mind and free up enough brain space to make ideas. But if you’re not ready to commit to a meditation practice, we have another suggestion that anyone can try: writing!
Before you get stuck with writer’s block, consider these options for how to relax your mind with writing:
- Dear, diary. Yes, a journal could be just the right place to start. Bring back your inner teenager by starting a journal. Use journal writing as an opportunity to address your challenges, give appreciation for your successes or establish future goals. Remember it’s not what you write, but the act itself that will help you relax.
- Be creative. If a journal isn’t your thing, how about creative writing? Try your hand at poetry or writing the next great American novel. The endless possibilities of creative writing could provide the type of release mechanism your mind is craving.
- Carve out time. Make writing a priority in your schedule. Help yourself unwind at the end of the day by writing each night before you sleep. Or maybe you’d prefer to do your writing at the beginning of the day over coffee. With either choice, the point is to make sure you’re allowing yourself the time to quiet your mind.
